CRUELTY IN CAMPANIA AREA

On Monday, two Italian animal rescuers, Martina and Guilia and I were at the AWL Hospice, when an English speaking woman came by. She was very upset, visibly shaking, and shouting at us through the gate.

She had a puppy in the car that she had just found on the beach trying to suck milk from her dead mother. Many of the beach-front businesses will put poison-laced dog food out on the beach to "control" the stray population. We can only assume that is what happened here, because the lady said the mother had clearly been poisoned, due to the way she looked when found. It was a slow, painful death.

Can you imagine the little one, his tiny stomach knotting from hunger, desperately trying to get the nurishment his instinct tells him should be gotten from his mother? And there she is, her dead teet providing nothing. Simply heartbreaking!

We decided on the spot that AWL could de-worm and put frontline on him, and wonderful Guilia took him to her little shelter. He is up for adoption. Please, can you give him hope?

This is Achilles. People threw acid on him--he is the fifth dog that we've encountered oursleves here in Campania who had been cruely injured this way. In some cases, after sterilization, the stray dogs are released back onto the street and in some ways this can be positive as long as the dog does not approach the people. Normally, the dogs are released in the outskirts, in areas of Camorra territory where people are killing each other. Where people are killing people, the life of a dog is worth less than a cigarette. Achilles, didn't have a home and apparently some people who could not "read" an animal got scared and wanted him out of the area. With acid they harm the animal, drive him off and hope for it to be a slow painful death.

We need help with putting him in a safe place were he can heal and get his wounds looked after. Acid burns are particularly difficult, and can lead to infections if not properly kept clean. Please help us with donations, so Achilles can feel there is hope. Saddly, AWL's Hospice can not take him in because we already have plenty of males, and no room. It's hurting us that already we have to turn down someone that needs us so badly. But with your help, we can still help Achilles. Please help us help Achilles!

Either through PayPal or our Italian account, any donation is very much appreciated.

ONE BIG ONE SMALL BOTH IN NEED OF LOVE

Amore Bella in need of a yard! A wonderful 96lb mastiff named Bella. She is approximately 2yrs old. She is currently living on base, but the base is forcing the owner to find a new home for her. So it is nothing wrong with the dog! (like 97% of the time)

This little sweet puppy was found together with her sibblings in the garbage. For several days no mother was in sight. Bea, a fantastic Italian woman, made sure all 5 got homes, and AWL is helping Abe and Martha's little new friend (above picture) in their house with up-to-date shots and microchip and later steralization.

Romeo Needs A Home

Sweet Romeo found in a storm drain two days ago, where his parents couldn't reach him.

David rescued him, and we think that Romeo is around 6-8 weeks. Been to the vet already. Living in a foster home together with another female dog, and as you can see he loves children.

We want the perfect family for Romeo, with quiet, calm and loving children. If no children, that is great too. We need Amore to this little tough and loving Romeo.

Pa-Law The Sofa Amore

Sometimes we also need "very" sunny stories. Let me share one with you this morning. Bruce is a fantastic guy that helped/worked with Animals Without Animals when we cleaned and helped dogs in the terrible shelter back in January/February. (earlier blog)

Hey Mia,
Here's my new pup!! His name is Pa'Lon (pronounced Pa-Law). Tony, who owns the hardware on JFC, found him on the interstate. He's about three months old, very well behaved and loves my sofa!! He's also very smart.
He's a very calm puppy and responds to commands like a well trained dog.
I'm so excited to have him!! I'm getting him registered this week. He gets along happily with my cat Shakespeare.

This is a "very" Amore sofa. Good Luck Guys!

AWL Helps Tommy Get A Family

Three puppies was left on this Signoras street, and would have faced a hard life if not taken cared off. Tommy, was adopted by an Italian family that adores him.
He is a sweet heart.
Dr. Inga did the vaccination and a regular check up just to find out he is doing great.
A donation from the lady that adopted Tommy was made. Thank you so Amore much.

Good Luck Tommy!

One Brilliant Student

I have to say it: Fox is brilliant! It's more me who is having the problem (in 90%, it is the owner confusing their own dog)

Fox is learning so fast, I am very proud over him. Fox, who had been locked inside a small lot his whole life; never have been in a car, never played with other dogs, never got to read human body language. His "human contact" consisted of a plate of food pushed in under the gate. When the plate was not reachable the person used an umbrella to pull it out for refiling. That is the extent of his "socialization". Pretty pathetic, on the part of the humans.

Our teacher said today that Fox is well behaved, since he allowed me to hang over him when trying to figure out how the heck his harness worked. It was tough, a brilliantly designed harness, in two colors so you knew which was up and which would go under the stomach. But still a struggle to put on for the first time.

Then he learned how to listen when hearing his name, and he who didn't even know his name, but after few minutes he got the hang of it. It took me the whole lesson (not my name... to keep track of the different commands, and when to reward!)
We tried a clicker. And gosh that was great, so on our way home we bought a yellow one....important with colors so I can spot it in a heartbeat were I put it the last time.

On our way home Fox and I went and fed the new puppies that AWL is going to try to help at the skeleton houses.

Fox was a brilliant student, like the teacher said, "he is very curious." And that is a good grade for a beginner.

This is Adonis. He is up for adoption. He is one of the five puppies at the skeleton house. More on him and his siblings in a later post.
