DO YOU WANT A HELPING HAND?

Many times do we AWL (www.animalswithoutlimits.com) see horrifying pictures of old dogs in cages. The text tell us they have been there more than 10 years. In a cage, no grass, no bed, no healthy food. No medical attention. They smell and have bad skin problems.

We contact the shelter operators about many of them, asking if we can adopt them to our Hospice in Southern Italy, where the client can have their own bedroom, couch, small garden, healthy food, and a veterinarian that comes and makes sure they are not suffering. Most important is that they get attention and love, a place to call home.

The sad thing is that many shelters turn our offers down! They prefer to have their dogs like this for a slim hope that people will come and donate money to them. Many are scared of letting them go, they have been their "friend" for 15 years in that cage, wagging and hoping one day to get out. I do believe in some cases, it is similar to "horder syndrome" where the people just can't part with anything, even living creatures that are suffering. Some people are in worse condition than the dogs, and claim they love the dog, and don't want the dog to go to someone else. They say it is better if we help with money for medicine and food.

AWL does not do that. We never give money to shelters. We work with shelters that have trust in us and our veterinarian. Those who know who I am and what AWL stands for.

I urge FB readers to know that sometimes a dog is indeed suffering, but regardless of what we want, we are not allowed to do anything.

In February will we have some Senior rooms ready. I hope we can work together to put some deserving dogs in them.
That's Amore!

MIA MATTSSON MERCER HONORED BY HARLIGA HUND

Mia Mattsson Mercer is being honored by Harliga Hunds Magazine "The Dog Friend of the Year" for her fantastic commitment (work in Italy)

From Mia; Thank you so much Lotta Sjölin Fredriksson for posting and lovely words on my private wall. It was a nice "welcome" home. I want to share my honor with so many, and I am afraid to start mentioning names and probably with my fog brain forget to write someones name. First I want to thank Magazine Harliga Hundar for  putting such a big spotlight on a big problem. THANK YOU for daring being such a flexible interesting Magazine. That's Amore.

To  journalist Katarina Arnstad who also have a great mind and heart, who listens and understand how important the whole picture is even how bad it is (or strange) You really help making a difference for animals in need. Your pen becomes magic and the message can come out in the light. THANK YOU!

My animals friends and supporters in Sweden, Germany, Italy, USA without you we cannot exist. Thank you for believing in me and my passion and our volunteers. To every animal rescuer, single person or organization the honor should go to you too. I know how hard you work and how hard it is. Keep the passion flowing, and let the tears give you strength. That's Amore.

Thank you everyone, Grazie, Tack Mia

PS THE Magazine is out in the Swedish stores.

GUARDIAN ANGELS FOUND HIM

This is Frank, a beautiful German Shepard probably between 7-8 years old.
Frank was found on a busy street (highway), in Neaples. He had been hit by a car, and left to die. Francesco and Melania, two volunteers from Naples, just saw Frank, stopped to see if he was alive... Frank was sick, very sick, but he was alive. They took Frank to a veterinarian were he had to go through several surgeries. The vet had to remove the spleen and stop internal bleeding.
15 days later a new surgery; fracture of his right paw, he has the joints completely pulped. The operation appears successful, but we do not know if this giant will be able to keep the leg,
His left front leg is fractured, so far no surgery on that one.

Chiarra and Francesco came with Frank to Casa dell'Amore (hospice & recovery center) and what a trooper. He will stay for two weeks and hopefully a home will be found.

He is such a big sweet loving guy who need a forever home that can have him and pet him all day long.

Tomorrow we are bringing him in to get checked at dr Damiani's clinic. Keep your paws.
A big warm hand to Francesco and Melania for stopping and checking if the dog was alive. I get scared of thinking how many that are still alive laying on the highway.
Chiara Ricci for helping Frank and taking care of him and thank you ALL for your support so Frank can recover at Casa dell'Amore AWL. Without your donations we cannot exist.
That's Amore.

AWL CASA DELL'AMORE OPEN UP FOR A NEW HEART

Our little big Joy arrived at the hospice this morning, and my heart melted right away. Those long ears, those big watery eyes, that grey face and long small legs.

Joy (Gioia in Italian) is about 14 years old, skinny but with a positive attitude.
She let all the dogs at the hospice smell her and then she started to smell around. What a good girl.
She is an old hunting dog that has been on a chain for many years. She has many cuts on her ears.
Found on the streets in the Napoli area among cars, lost and hungry.

Now she is with us. If someone wants to adopt her, a forever home only please, since she loves to cuddle and scratch those inner legs. She is a beautiful spirit, with a lot of fantastic manners.

She was shivering when Pio and Martina brought her in to Casa dell'Amore. I ran up to the office and took out a brand new dog coat for her. Perfect size!
AWL Sweden had sent down a package, I sent them a warm thought in thanks. That's warm Amore!
Again to my great animal team Martina and Pio. They are doing such a great team work. Francesca thank you for your heart with Joy. AWL supporters thank you for your donations we can open our door for these lost souls. Your donation is making a big difference. That's Amore.

BRUNO LONGHEART

Bruno, our beloved loving goof, has in a short time gone through so many people's hearts and still he is touching all of us who comes in his way.
We are very protective over our AWL dogs, and with Bruno it is even a little extra.

You can read about Bruno's journey via Tammy to AWL on earlier blogs, and now he has gotten a new owner--we hope--Both Bruno and James will go on a so called 2 week "trial period" together.

It is always difficult to adopt a 'stranger" and also for Bruno, James is a stranger whom we don't know much about, either. So both have to trust each other and do their best.

James, with his friends came out to the AWL Hospice last Sunday to meet Bruno.
James loved Bruno, there is something about Bruno Longheart!

James walked Bruno and he stayed by his side, he and his friends took him home. Some accidents have happened but James and friend Abbi takes it all with peace; they understand that Bruno has never been inside a home before. We suspect he is a former chained dog, it is very common here.

James and his friends do a lot of outdoor activities: hiking, camping, climbing and they love to bring their dogs with them. So I think Bruno will have a blast.

I spoke to James yesterday and he told me Bruno is a fast learner. What made me pleased was to hear that James and Abbi go home for lunch, taking him outside and playing. They have already gone through one soccer ball.
So how about Bruno donations? How about donating your football or soccer ball to the best player in the world. Bruno Longheart!

DUTCH MILITARY COMMUNITY HEROS

I have to tell you the whole story. My phone rang at 20.30 one evening and I had had a horrible day with a lot of hard work and difficult cases and difficult people to deal with. I looked at the phone and it said "Barbara German Shepherds" This was a Dutch family that had adopted 2 puppies from us several weeks ago. In my negative mind at that moment I thought, "gosh they don't want the puppies anymore."

The phone rang again, I took it and answered thinking "better to deal with it now than tomorrow".

I heard this glad voice telling me how wonderful the puppies were, and how they enjoyed them.

Now I was clueless. 'Can we, the Dutch Military Community, come by the hospice?. We have a check to you for 600 euros!" You see, each nation's contingent earns money at the annual International Bazaar by selling food, drinks or other culturally-unique items, and then donate the proceeds it to a worthy cause. The Dutch contingent thought Animals Without Limits, and our hospice, was just such a worthy cause.

What a great ending of a rough day! I was floating on clouds. Thank you so much Dutch Military community for bringing such a wonderful early Christmas gift to the Hospice "Casa della Amore"

In honor of the donation, we had a little bit of bubbles, and the four legged oldies thought it was fun with so much attention and love.

I have always seen these kinds of big checks in magazines and on TV, and always thought it would be wonderful to hold one. And let me tell you, it was wonderful.

Showing our Memorial Wall of past clients that now play at the Rainbow bridge.

Thank you beautiful, warmhearted, JP, Barbara, Tiko del Rojj, Hans Stuij, Dita Bergwerff, Freya van Engelen. And of course the whole Dutch Military Community. Thanks for all the Amore.

(And the dog food that you also brought with you)
